Sex and the City S1E2: Vocabulary

sex and the city s1e2 vocabulary

18+ Урок содержит постельные сцены и соответствующую лексику на английском языке.

Каково это – иметь штучку для красивых женщин (have a thing for beautiful women)? Вот вы о чем сейчас подумали, мои маленькие извращенцы?))) Ах да, кстати, как по-английски будет «извращенец»? А «натурал»? А «извращенец-натурал»?

В этом уроке по второй серии Sex and the City (S1E2: Vocabulary)

(Sex and the City S1E2: Listening), где мы прокачивали умение понимать на слух, загляните сюда.)

Sex and the City S1E2: Vocabulary

Разговорные слова и выражения

Я очень не люблю (и практически никогда так не делаю с ни в чем не повинными учениками))) выдавать списки слов и выражений, хоть сколько полезных. Список будет, но потом, в конце урока – его можно будет скачать и повторять лексику.

А сначала эффективнее (да и просто интереснее!) посмотреть на новые слова и фразы в контексте. Этим и займемся. Где-то попробуем самостоятельно догадаться о смысле новых выражений; где-то, наоборот, запишем фразы на слух.

All you have to do is follow the white rabbit instructions))

TAKE THE HIGH ROAD, DOESN’T CUT IT

- I've been out with a lot of guys and they say I am just as beautiful as a model, but I work for a living. I'm like, well I'm like a model who’s 1) taken the high road.

- The advantages given to models and to beautiful women in general are so unfair, it makes me wanna puke.

- Sweetheart, you are so cute.

- Cute 2) doesn’t cut it in this town. What’s cute compared to supermodel?

Посмотрите еще на парочку примеров с каждым выражением:

  • I could have lied but instead, I decided to take the high road.
  • The magazine got hold of Rihanna’s private photos, but they took the high road and didn’t publish them.

  • ‘Sorry’ doesn’t cut it. If you really want to make it up to her, get her some flowers or jewellery, or both.
  • When it comes to learning languages, studying grammar won’t cut it; you need lots of speaking practice.

А теперь выберите правильный ответ. Кроме примеров выше, конечно, можно пользоваться контекстом - как раз этому мы учились в соседнем уроке (Sex and the City S1E2: Context)

1. What’s the best way to paraphrase the highlighted part?
I am just as beautiful as a model, but I work for a living. I'm like, well I'm like a model who’s taken the high road.

travelled;travelled a lot;done what benefits me;done what’s morally right4

2. What’s the best way to paraphrase the highlighted part?

- Sweetheart, you are so cute.
- Cute doesn’t cut it in this town. What’s cute compared to supermodel?

is not good enough;is not honest;is not important;is not helpful1

GET IT UP

Из песни слов не выкинешь, да и сериал Sex and the City не для пуритан, поэтому послушаем, о чем еще говорят героини.

HAPPEN TO

- What?
- Come on
- I 4) happen to love the way I look
- You should. You paid enough for it.
- Hey, I resent that. I do not believe in plastic surgery. Well
, not yet.

Давайте посмотрим на другие примеры с happen to:

  • We're not related - we just happen to have the same name.
  • I'm sorry I didn't phone first - I just happened to be in the area and thought I'd drop in.

И какая разница между:

  • I love the way I look
  • I happen to love the way I look

  • We're not related - we just have the same name
  • We're not related - we just happen to have the same name

  • I'm sorry I didn't phone first - I was in the area and thought I'd drop in
  • I'm sorry I didn't phone first - I just happened to be in the area and thought I'd drop in

Хм, вопрос, конечно, интересный)) В данном конкретном примере с the way I lookhappen to немного снижает пафос высказывания и градус самолюбования. А в других примерах подчеркивает случайность, стечение обстоятельств.

4. What’s the best way to translate this sentence:
"I happen to love the way I look".

Со мной что-то произошло, когда я смотрела на дорогу;Был у меня случай на дороге;Так уж получилось, что мне нравится, как я выгляжу;Я случайно люблю, как я выгляжу3

What do you think the highlighted phrases mean? Use context and choose the best answer.

20. Samantha calls Barkley ‘a pervert’ because _____. So, ‘a pervert’ is someone _____.

he has been coming on to her;he believes she is a model; because he has a thing for models;he tapes himself having sex with models4whose sexual practices are considered strange or abnormal;whose job is to make videos;who has a thing for models;who behaves strangely1

SCREW

Models are a lot looser than you'd think. It's way easier to screw a model than a regular girl ‘cos that’s what they do all the time. It's  how regular people are when they're on vacation.

В уроке по первой серии (Sex and the City S1E1: Vocabulary) мы уже встречали слово screw, вот только в другом значении. Давайте посмотрим на несколько примеров каждого значения и попробуем самостоятельно разобраться, ху is ху, ху из screw, а также screw из screw))

  • She didn't want to see the movie, but I thought, screw it, I'm going anyway.
  • It’s a lot of work. Oh, screw it! I’ll do it tomorrow.

  • I'm not dating him, god, no, we're just screwing.
  • They say he's screwing the boss's wife.

21. What does the word ‘screw’ mean in these examples (highlighted in different colors – screw VS screw):

- He denies it, but how could anyone that gorgeous be straight?

22. What do you think is the OPPOSITE of ‘straight’ in this context?

EXCEPT, AN EXCEPTION, EXCEPTIONALLY

Ух ты, какое раздолье и великолепие! Except и вся его языковая семейка, простите, word family, ну или однокоренные слова, как мы называем их в русском языке. И само слово except в двух вариантов и разных значениях! Нырнем глубже?

- We should just admit that we live in a culture that promotes impossible standards of beauty.
- Yeah, except men think they're possible.
 - Yeah.

- I didn’t know what to say. There really wasn’t anything to say, except… Do you have a light?
Sure
В двух примерах выше except используется в двух разных значениях. Посмотрите еще на парочку примеров каждого:

  • The office is open every day except Sundays.
  • You can have any of the cakes except this one.
  • There really wasn’t anything to say, except… Do you have a light?

  • I have earrings just like those, except they’re blue.
  • I felt like I was ten years old again. Except I wasn't, of course.
  • - We live in a culture that promotes impossible standards of beauty. Yeah, except men think they're possible

Чувствуете разницу между первой группой и второй?

23 and 24. What do you think is the best way to translate ‘except’ in these two examples:

- We live in a culture that promotes impossible standards of beauty.
- Yeah, except men think they're possible.

There really wasn’t anything to say, except… Do you have a light?

кроме;исключительно;не исключая;вот только4кроме;исключительно;не исключая;вот только1

- So, uh where is it?
- What?
- The camera?
- Your friend Carrie tell you about that?
- Uh-huh
- Don’t worry, I only tape models
- I won't mind
- Fine I’ll make an exception
Exception часто употребляется в таких словосочетаниях / collocations:
  • make an exception
  • a rare exception
  • without exception
  • is no exception
  • with a few exceptions
  • with the exception of
  • exception to the rule
  • the exception, not the rule

А любителей перевода приглашаю в комментарии – есть ли в русском языке аналоги этим словосочетаниям? Или у нас те же идеи оформлены по-другому?

Как это часто бывает в английском, само по себе слово exception не сложное; все портит незнание типичных словосочетаний, в которых слово употребляется. Подробнее о словосочетаниях = collocations (словарный запас состоит не из слов, а словосочетаний, готовых к употреблению "кусков", chunks) – здесь.

- Well, I'm discovering that some of them treat it as a competitive sport and others I think just need the validation
- And probably others just have a thing for exceptionally beautiful women
- Exactly.

Сложно говорить о слове exceptionally (adverb), не упомянув его ближайшего собрата exceptional (adjective).

Посмотрим, в каких словосочетаниях употребляются оба слова:

exceptional + noun

(exceptional что?)

exceptionally + adjective

(exceptionally какой?)

exceptional talent

exceptional quality

exceptional bravery

exceptional circumstances

exceptionally rare (sight)

exceptionally talented (player)

exceptionally low (prices)

exceptionally wealthy (person)

exceptionally beautiful (emerald)

TREAT

- So you're saying it's easy to meet them?
- No, not so easy. The trick is you gotta treat them like they're regular girls. You gotta be able to roll into a place, walk up to the hottest thing there, otherwise you're finished. It's kinda like being around dogs, you gotta show no fear.

- So what have you discovered about these men who are dating models?

- Well, I'm discovering that some of them treat it as a competitive sport and others I think just need the validation

- And probably others just have a thing for exceptionally beautiful women.

- Exactly.

Знаю, что многие привыкли к тому, что treat = лечить. Но, как видите, в этих двух примерах лечение вовсе не при чем. Да, у слова treat есть и другие значения. Посмотрите на другие примеры:

  • Despite her seniority, she was never treated with much respect.
  • She treats everything I say as a joke.
  • I don't know why he stays with her - she treats him like crap!

27 and 28. What does the word ‘treat’ describe in these examples:

you gotta treat them like they're regular girls
some of them treat it as a competitive sport

medical procedures;actions;thoughts;attitude4

OTHERWISE

Suddenly, I was interested. If models could cause otherwise rational individuals to crumble in their presence, exactly how powerful was beauty?

- So you're saying it's easy to meet them?
- No, not so easy. The trick is you gotta treat them like they're regular girls. You gotta be able to roll into a place, walk up to the hottest thing there, otherwise you're finished. It's kinda like being around dogs, you gotta show no fear

Ну что ты будешь делать, опять одно слово используется в нескольких значениях!))

  • You’ll have to go now, otherwise you’ll miss your bus.
  • Put your coat on, otherwise you’ll get cold.

  • He was tired but otherwise in good health.
  • This spoiled an otherwise excellent piece of work.
  • Their arrival livened up an otherwise dull afternoon.

29 and 30. What do you think is the best translation for the word ‘otherwise’ in each example:

If models could cause otherwise rational individuals to crumble in their presence, exactly how powerful was beauty?
You gotta be able to roll into a place, walk up to the hottest thing there, otherwise you're finished. It's kinda like being around dogs, you gotta show no fear

иначе;следовательно;не;в остальном4иначе;следовательно;не;в остальном1

HAVE A THING FOR

- They told Miranda that Nick had this thing for models.

- OK! Old movie stars you’d have liked to fuck when they were young. I’ll start: Veronica Lake, the year she made Sullivan’s Travels.

- Dave?

- I'd have to go with Sophia Loren, probably ‘cos my dad had a thing for her.

- Well, I'm discovering that some of them treat it as a competitive sport and others I think just need the validation
- And probably others just have a thing for exceptionally beautiful women
- Exactly
О, вот она, штучка для красивых женщин!)))

- Well, whatever it is you don’t want to go there.

- Why not?

- He has this thing for secretly taping his conquests.

- Really? What a pervert.

Столько примеров, что уже, наверное, и без лишних слов понятно, что значит выражение have a thing for.

Пишите догадки в комментариях или загляните в словарик и проверьте себя (можно скачать в конце урока).

OVER HERE, OVER THERE

Sweetie, over here!

- Do you see him?
- Right over there.
- Where?

- So where do you, uh, where do you write these stories?
- My cute stories?
- Yeah, have you got an office or anything?
- No, well about half the time I'm at my apartment and the other half I'm over at this coffee shop on 73rd and Madison

Over частенько используется именно в таких словосочетаниях:

  • over here
  • over there

Чтобы понять великий смысл over, можно представить характерный жест рукой, когда машешь к себе или от себя через пространство.

Еще примеры:

  • I saw Jim from across the room and went over (=crossed the room) to say hello.
  • Come over here and see what I’ve found.
  • Do you see that building over there?

THAT

- Can you believe anyone that beautiful can be that nice? I keep dreaming that someday he's just gonna turn around and say ‘Stanford, I love you’
- Is he gay?
- He denies it, but how could anyone that gorgeous be straight?

37. What do you think is the best way to translate ‘that’ in the examples above?

тот;что;который;настолько;насколько;столько4

Теперь можно попрактиковаться и сделать упражнения к новым словам и выражениям из урока - Sex and the City S1E2: Vocabulary Exercises.

Разобрались в новых словах и выражениях? Или остались вопросы? Давайте обсудим в комментариях!

И как думаете, уместна ли подобная лексика (get it up, screw a model, etc.)
